About

The Société d'Encouragement established its headquarters in 1852, 4 place Saint Germain-des-Prés in Paris in the 6th, opposite the abbey church of Saint Germain-des-Prés, a stone's throw from the "Deux magots". The Hôtel de l'Industrie was designed to accommodate its eminent members, many of whom are illustrious such as Jean-Antoine Chaptal, Alexandre Becquerel, Louis Pasteur, Gustave Eiffel. The Hôtel de l'Industrie was one of the main centers of innovation in 19th century Paris, opening its doors to researchers, inviting the most prestigious speakers, not hesitating to organize demonstrations and experiments, and to exhibit inventions. This is how it was one of the pioneering places of cinema: it was in one of these rooms, for example, that the Lumière brothers made their first projection, a founding act in 1895 of the cinema industry. It was also one of the places of political, social, cultural, or simply festive, life in the neighborhood and the left bank. Today he continues this tradition.
